Jok Somphet Restaurant in Chiang Mai
Jok Somphet is a 24 hour restaurant which is a true Chiang Mai ‘dining institution’ much loved by local residents and widely known by Thai people from other parts of the country. Jok Somphet is located on the outer edge of Chiang Mai’s old walled city area near the Chang Phueak Gate, on the north side of the old city. From the outside, especially during the day time, Jok Somphet looks like many other inexpensive Thai restaurants in the town. The interior and furnishings are basic and no alcohol is served. Late at night and early in the morning, however, Jok Somphet becomes one of the liveliest places in the city often with no space left at any of the tables.

The dishes which Jok Somphet is best known for are its rice soups. Many Thai people like to eat rice soup for breakfast and many also really like to rice soup after a night out drinking. For those people who don’t like rice soup, there are some other really great dishes here. Jok Somphet sells the best roast chicken and rice in the city and also very good khao soy noodles, which is a curry noodle dish. Jok Somphet also sells very good, and very cheap, dim sum in small steaming dishes.
