By public bus it takes 10 to 11 hours to travel 636 km from Bangkok to Surat Thani. You can also fly from Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok to Surat Thani Airport with low cost airlines Nok Air and Thai AirAsia, or take a train from Bangkok to Surat Thani. Travelling bu bus is the cheapest option.

About Surat Thani
Surat Thani is a transport hub for onward travel to the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, as well as other lesser visited beach resort such as Khanom and Sichon. Surat Thani is also the place to go to get a minivan to Khao Sok National Park. The Lomprayah High Speed Ferry company has ferry terminal near Surat Thani town centre, all the other ferry services depart from Donsak District, which is 70 km by road from Surat Thani. There are joint bus and ferry services from Surat Thani town to the ferry piers in Donsak with regular departures during daylight hours. Its easy to get from Surat Thani to the islands.

Surat Thani city itself is not a popular destination for tourists. The town has few tourist attractions. If you do stay over night in Surat Thani the most interesting things to do are to visit the markets. Surat Thani Night Market is the liveliest of the markets in the city and a great place to go to eat Southern Thai food.
