About Damnoen Saduak Floating Market near Ratchaburi
Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, located to 24.6 km by road to the east of Ratchaburi, is one of Thailand’s most famous tourist attractions. The market is located on the Damnoen Saduak Canal which was completed in 1868 at a time when travel by boat on Thailand’s waterways was the country’s principal form of inland transport.
The land around Ratchaburi is very fertile and a lot of vegetables and fruit have traditionally been grown in this area. The canal was used to transport this agricultural produce and a market known as Lad Plee developed as place for buyers from Bangkok to come and purchase direct from the growers. Lad Plee market remained busy until the mid 1960s, at which point produce from the area switched from being transported by canal to being transported on newly constructed roads.

The market came back to life in 1971 when the Tourism Authority of Thailand started to promote it as a tourist attraction with vendors selling to visitors rather than commercial buyers. The Tourism Authority’s efforts were also helped by the appearance of the market in the 1974 James Bond film, the Man with the Golden Gun.
The rehabilitation of the old floating market accelerated again in 1981 when a road to the canal side was built and at this point the new name of Damnoen Saduak Floating Market was introduced.
