About Phang Nga Bay

To the south of Phang Nga town is Phang Nga Bay, much of which has been designated a nature reserve. Phang Nga Bay covers an area of approximately 400 square kilometres which contains 42 islands. most of which are uninhabited. The striking thing about Phang Nga Bay is the steep sided sea cliffs and islands rising from the bay, which also contain many partially submerged caves. About 10,000 years ago the water levels were lower and there is some interesting evidence, such as cave paintings, which suggest that people once lived in this now flooded area.

Koh Tapu in Phang Nga Bay

The most popular tourist site in Phang Nga Bay is Koh Tapu, which is the sheer needle of rock rising from the sea which appeared in the film the ‘Man with the Golden Gun’. Near to Koh Tapu is Koh Panyee which is a small island around which a Muslim community has built houses on stilts. Traditionally the people from Koh Panyee made a living from fishing, now they also make money from tourism with their tiny island being a stop for most tour groups. To see more of the bay you can hire your own private tour boat or better still go on a kayak tour. Travelling by kayak allows you access to many submerged caves and to smaller islands water around which is very shallow.
