About Nakhon Phanom

There are three main reasons why visitors come to Nakhon Phanom. The first reason, and the explanation for why the majority of foreign visitors come to Nakhon Phanom, is because there is a bridge connecting Thailand and Laos 15 km to the North of Nakhon Phanom bus station. Roads in Laos tend to be very poor and it is more convenient for people going to Laos to cross the border from Thailand as close as they can to part of Laos they wish to visit and hence the popularity of this border crossing.

The second why people come to Nakhon Phanom is to visit the house where Ho Chi Minh stayed between 1928 and 1931. The house, now a museum, attracts a steady stream of Vietnam tourists. The third reason visitors come to Nakhon Phanom, particularly Thai visitors, is the temple of Wat Phra That 55 km to the South in the town of That Phanom. Wat Phra Tat dates back to the 16th Century and has a 57 metre tall chedi with a spire covered in gold.
