About Udon Thani

Udon Thani is one of the larger cities in the North Eastern region of Thailand with a metropolitan population of over 400,000 people. Udon Thani has a small number of tourist attractions, although it does have lots of facilities for foreign visitors and a surprisingly large community of foreign residents, mostly European retirees, attracted to the city by its cheap prices and relaxed atmosphere. Udon Thani has great transport links as well with two long distance bus stations, a train station connecting the city to Bangkok to the south and Nong Khai, order with Laos, to the north, and an airport with regular flights to Bangkok and Chiang Mai as well as to Phuket, Pattaya and Ubon Ratchathani.

The major tourist attraction, Ban Chiang, in the area is not in Udon Thani itself but 50 km to the east of the city centre. Ban Chiang is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a museum displaying a range of archaeological finds from the local area. Ban Chiang was home to one of the earliest Bronze Age settlements discovered to date. The Ban Chiang National Museum has an impressive range of pottery dating back to around 2,000 BC, and possibly before, as well as items made in bronze from the age demonstrating a significant level of technological sophistication for that period of human history.
