About Surat Thani
Surat Thani city is the main town in the Southern Thai Province of Surat Thani. Surat Thani city is fairly large with a permanent population of around 125,000 people. Surat Thani city itself is not, however, a popular tourist destination although large number of foreign visitors do end up going there. The reason foreign visitors go there is because it has a major railway station on the train line running from Bangkok all the way down to the Thai/Malay border, a regional airport, and a variety of ferry services over to the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Because of the large numbers of people transiting through Surat Thani city it has a fairly good range of hotels and restaurants catering for foreign visitors, and lots of travel agencies.
If you do end up spending the night in Surat Thani then we suggest that the best way to spend your evening is by visiting the night markets in the city. There are several different night markets and most operate on different nights of the week. One which is open every night of the week, and has the widest variety of food stalls, is on the Tonpo Alley 350 metres walking distance to the North East of the Phantip Travel office. If you are fortunate enough to be in Surat Thani city on a Saturday night the largest market of the week takes place on the south bank of the Tapee River starting just to the north of the Night Boat Pier.
