About Surat Thani

Surat Thani is a city without any major tourists attractions that most foreign visitors only go to on their way to and from the islands of Koh Phangan, Koh Tao and Koh Samui, or to and from Surat Thani Railway Station, which is on the Southern Railway Line connecting Bangkok to Malaysia. Surat Thani is a relatively modern town with few buildings older than 30 years and most built in concrete. What Surat Thani does have is a unique Southern Thai culture and it is a great place to sample the unique regional cuisine.

The central feature of Surat Thani city is the wide meandering Tapee River which flows through the centre. The riverside in Surat Thani hosts several night markets a week, including the Saturday Night Market in the city centre which is the largest event of the week in Surat Thani. The river is also important in terms of transport in the region. The famous night boat services to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao all depart from the Tapee River from a city centre pier. The pier has its own night food market which is one of the busiest and liveliest places in Surat Thani city centre in the evening. The liveliest spot in Surat Thani city in the evening is, however, the Night Market on the Tonpo Alley just 300 metres walk from the Night Boat Pier. This Night Market takes place every night of the year and is well know for serving a very wide range of foods from Thai to Western dishes at very cheap prices. The market is generally very busy all year round and an atmospheric place to sit and eat as well as to have a drink.
