Udon Thani is a large and lively town in the north east of Thailand which is popular with ex-pats whose go to live there because its affordable and has plenty of western style restaurants and bars. The town is not so much on the normal tourist trail as it doesn’t have lots of places of interest to visit like in Ayutthaya or Bangkok.

Ban Chiang

The main tourist attraction in Udon Thani is Ban Chiang, which has an archaeological site with a museum 50 km to the east of Udon Thani city centre.

Area Close to the Train Station

Udon Thani city centre has two popular parts. For foreign visitors the main place to stay is the area around Udon Thani Train Station, which has a very lively night market and some very affordable hotels such as the excellent Top Mansion. The place to go in the evening is the Samphan Thamit Alley which has lots of bars and restaurants.

At the weekend particularly you should go for a drink at the night market which is normally the busiest place in the city on a Saturday night with live music, cheap food and a great atmosphere.

Area Close to Nong Prajak Park

The other part of Udon Thani worth visiting is the downtown area around Nong Prajak Park, which is famous for its large plastic yellow ducks. The city’s main temple, Wat Pothisomphon, is very close to Nong Prajak Park.
