Wat Tham Suea in Krabi
Wat Tham Suea is a Buddhist temple 9 km by road to the north of Krabi Town. Wat Tham Suea attracts a lot of visitors and its entirely free to visit. The temple is large and has many parts. The most popular part of Wat Tham Suea is the hill top shrine which can only be reached by climbing 1,260 steps. It’s a steep ascent that takes 20 to 40 minutes to complete depending on how fit you are. Most visitors will stop several times on the way up because it’s very hard work. The climb is best attempted early in the morning when the weather is cooler. The views from the top, however, make the walk up well worth the effort.

The other part of the temple which attracts a lot of visitors is a forested area with a number of caves which are used as a meditation retreats by the monks. You need to walk up and down more stairs to get to this part of the temple and less people go there because they are already tired from the long climb up to and down from the hill top shrine. Wat Tham Suea means ‘Tiger Cave Temple’ and the name is believed to have originated from the marks on the wall of one of the cave which looks like the paw prints of a tiger. Some of the caves have shrines inside and the trail through the forest to visit the caves is very pleasant.
