About Travel to Krabi

Krabi Province is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand. Compared to Phuket, however, Krabi tends to be cheaper and generally less crowded.

Choosing Where to Stay in Krabi

The majority of the foreign holidaymakers coming to Krabi Province will stay in one or more of the following four places: Ao Nang, Railay, Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta. There are though other places in Krabi Province which are also worth visiting, including Krabi Town and Koh Jum.

Krabi Town

Krabi Town is the only tourist town in Krabi which doesn’t have a beach. What Krabi Town does have though is a very picturesque riverside park, several great markets and plenty of good bars and restaurants. From Krabi Town it’s also only a short way to Wat Tham Suea, which is the Tiger Cave Temple famous for its hilltop shrine and cave shrines.

Ao Nang

Located 17 km by road from Krabi Town, Ao Nang is the most popular destination in mainland Krabi. The town is located behind a 1.4 km long swimming beach, and features a very wide of restaurants and bars specifically catering to foreign visitors. Ao Nang is very tourist oriented and caters well to families. The hotels range in price and quality considerably.

Railay

Railay is a peninsula immediately to the east of Ao Nang Beach which you can’t reach by road because of the hilly landscape. Boats to Railay depart from  Ao Nang Beach as well as several other piers in the area.

Railay has four beaches, each with a small town or village behind. The most popular of these four beaches is Railway West Beach.

Koh Phi Phi

From Krabi it’s a 1 hour journey by speedboat or a 2 hour journey by ferry to Koh Phi Phi. Both ferry and speedboats from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi arrive on the island at Tonsai Pier.

Tonsai Pier is located in Tonsai village, which is the most popular part of Koh Phi Phi and one of the most densely packed tourist destinations in Thailand. Koh Phi Phi is very beautiful, but older visitors and families may not like Tonsai Village. It’s very popular with younger single travellers.

Koh Lanta

From Koh Phi Phi it’s a further 30 minutes by speedboat and 1 hours by ferry to Koh Lanta.

Koh Lanta is very different to Koh Phi Phi. The visitor numbers of far fewer and the island is large. It’s a much more relaxing place to visit than Koh Phi Phi and generally a lot cheaper. For these reasons, Koh Lanta is the holiday destination of choice for many European families.
