The most visited part of Wat Saket is the 80 metre high hill in the temple grounds. From the top of the hill there are panoramic views of Bangkok, which is built on an otherwise flat plain. The hill was created by accident in the late 17th Century by King Rama III who was attempting to construct a massive chedi at Wat Saket. Because of the soft water logged ground where the temple is located the chedi King Rama III attempted to build collapsed, leaving a large mound of earth and bricks. King Rama IV later reinforced the sides of this new hill with timber and ordered that a smaller chedi be built on top, which is still there today. King Rama V added further to the the temple by bringing an important Buddha relic from Sri Lanka to be enshrined at the temple. The sides of the hill were concreted in the 1940s as they remain today ensuring the stability of this curious man made hill in the centre of Bangkok.
