Arrival in Bangkok

The arrival point Bangkok for joint ferry and bus services from Koh Mak varies depending upon which company you travel with:

  • Boonsiri High Speed Ferries: Khao San Road area
  • TransBaanTon: Ekkamai Bus Station (Sukhumvit Road)
  • Mama Travel and Tour: Ekkamai Bus Station (Sukhumvit Road)
  • Seudamgo Catamaran: Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Khao San Road area

In terms of onward transport within Bangkok, the most convenient point of arrival is Ekkamai Bus Station. The reason Ekkamai Bus Station is the most convenient arrival point is because the bus station is within easy walking distance from Ekkamai BTS station. The BTS is Bangkok’s modern and efficient elevated suburban railway network which connects to both the MRT (Bangkok’s metro network) and the Airport Link (services between Bangkok and Suvarnabhumi International Airport).

Travel from the Khao San Road Area

In terms of public transport around Bangkok, the least convenient place to arrive in Bangkok is the Khao San Road area. The reason the Khao San Road area is the least convenient arrival point is because the Khao San Road area is not connected to any of Bangkok modern rapid transport systems (the MRT, BTS and Airport Link) and also because taxi drivers in the area are notorious for refusing to use their meters.

Instead, visitors to the Khao San Road area wanting to save money need to make use of some of the older and slower public transport systems in Bangkok:

  • Public Bus: Public bus services operate from close to the Khao San Road to destinations such as Siam Square, where passengers can transfer to the BTS network.
  • Canal Boats: Khlong Saen Saep canal boats depart from the Phanfa Bridge Pier, which is within easy walking distance of the Khao San Road. Passengers can travel to the Sukhumvit Road area on a Khlong Saen Saep canal boat service.
  • River Boats: Passengers can board a Chao Phraya Express Boat service at the Phra Arthit Express Boat Pier, which is an 800 metre walk from the centre of the Khao San Road. The Chao Phraya Express Boat service stops at lots of different piers along the river where passengers can connect to both the BTS and MRT network. Follow the link for a detailed description of how to travel by boat from the Khao San Road area to Bangkok Northern Bus Terminal.
