About Nakhon Phanom
Nakhon Phanom is a small town on the Mekong river 15 km south of a border crossing into Laos. You can travel from Bangkok to Nakhon Phanom either by bus or aeroplane. The journey by bus takes between 10 hours 30 minutes and 12 hours depending upon which service you use, but costs about a third what it does to fly.
Nakhon Phanom has two main attractions: Wat Phra That and house where Ho Chi Minh lived between 1928 and 1931 planning his return to Vietnam to start a revolution. The house where Ho Chi Minh lived is in Nakhon Phanom itself and a steady stream of Vietnamese tourists come to Nakhon Phanom to visit it. Wat Phra That temple is 55 km south of Nakhon Phanom in the town of Thai Phanom. Wat Phra That is an important temple in Thai Buddhism and is believed to possess a holy relic: the breastbone of Buddha. The main feature of Wat Phra That is its 57 metre tall chedi, the top piece of which is covered with over 100 kg of gold.
