About Travel from Koh Lanta to Phang Nga
Phang Nga is the main town is Phang Nga Province, which is a sparsely populated part of Thailand just to the north of Phuket. Phuket Town is also the main access point to the northern part of Phang Nga, which is where the bay’s most popular tourist attractions are located along with a large area of mangrove forest.
Staying in Phang Nga Town
Phang Nga Town is relatively small and not so many foreign visitors stay in the town overnight, although the feedback from those who do tends to be on the whole positive.
Phang Nga Town has a population of just under 10,000. It has around 25 tourist hotels and guesthouses, and a small number of the type of sit down restaurants which would typically appeal to holiday makers, such as Riverhouse Cafe and Raruen Cafe & Restaurant. There are a few restaurants offering ‘international cuisine’, such as Pinto, but little else specifically aimed at catering for foreign visitors.
Most of the hotels in Phang Nga Town offer fantastic value for money, from the 600 THB a night rooms at T.P. Place Hotel to the 1,400 THB a night rooms at Le Erawan Phang Nga Hotel. The one very expensive hotel in the area, Sametnangshe Boutique where rooms can cost as much as 19,000 THB a night, which is located 46 km by road to the south of Phang Town.

Tours of Phang Nga Bay
One thing Phang Nga Town does have is lots of guides and travel agents selling boat tours of Phangan Bay. Once you are in Phang Nga organising a tour is very easy.
A cheaper option, and one which allows you to avoid joining a group tour, is to make your own way to the tour boat pier and hire your own boat and driver. The tour boat pier (Tha Dan Pier) is located about 10 km by road to the south Phang Nga Town. Expect to pay around 1,500 THB for a 3 hour tour of the bay in a private wooden boat with 6 seats.
Phang Nga Bay
Phang Nga Bay covers a roughly 400 square kilometre area to the south of Phang Nga Town. The bay has 42 islands, many of which have steep sides and are similar to the more famous steep-sided islands in Ha Long Bay in Vietnam. There are lots of points of interest in Phang Nga Bay, the three popular of which are:
- Koh Panyee: Koh Panyee is an island with a small village built entirely on stilts over the sea. This isolated community was established at the end of the 18th Century by a group of fishermen from Java seeking a new home. About 1,500 people live in this community which has restaurants and shops for visitors who come on boat tours.
- Koh Tapu: Koh Tapu is a 20 metre tall limestone rock formation that rises from the sea about 40 metres from Khao Phing Kan Island. This rock tower is particularly famous for having appeared in the 1974 James Bond movie, ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’.
- Kayaking: Kayaking is a popular activity in Phang Nga. Kayaking is often offered as an additional activity on boat tours of the bay, and also as a full day activity with specialist operators such as John Gray Seacanoe. The most popular places to go kayaking are Phanak Island and Hong Island. Phanak Island has several sea caves which you kayak into and Hong Island is part of a cluster of smaller islands which can kayak between.
