About the Loha Prasat

The Loha Prasat is located in the grounds of Wat Ratchanatda on the Ratchadamnoen Klang Road in Bangkok. This building, which looks similar to a fairy tale castle, is believed to be based on an ancient India architectural design used previously in the construction of a building in India and another in Sri Lanka both of which no longer exist. The building in India is believed to have existed during the lifetime of the Lord Buddha and used as accommodation for 1,000 monks. Construction on the Loha Prasat in Bangkok started in 1846 under King Rama III and has only recently been completed.

The Loha Prasat is a square structure with 37 spires arranged in three tiers. The bottom tier has 24 spires, the middle tier has 12 spires and the top tier has a single spire which is 36 metres high. When the Loha Prasat was originally built the spires were a dull metallic colour and one of the finishing touches to the temple has been the application of gold paint. Inside the Loha Prasat is series on corridors and staircases linking small rooms which are used by the resident monks for private meditation. The upper most level of the building contains a shrine with holy relics.
