Wat Saket in Bangkok
Wat Saket, located 1.7 km walking distance to the east of the Grand Palace, is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Bangkok. Wat Saket, also known as the Temple of the Golden Mount, features a large shrine on top of an 80 metre high man made hill. The views from the top of the mount are spectacular with no other tall buildings near to the temple. Wat Saket is open every day from 08:00 to 17:00 and foreign visitors are required to pay an admission fee of 50 THB.

The hill top shrine came into existence by accident. The original plan had been to build a very large chedi tower in the grounds of Wat Saket. This large structure, however, collapsed before it could be completed because of the soft water logged ground in that part of Bangkok. The earth and stones eventually settled and were bound together by plants forming what became known as Phu Khao Tong, the Golden Mountain. Work was carried out in the 19th Century to reinforce the sides of the hill and a small building was added to the top at the very beginning of the 20th Century. Further work carried out in the 1940s covering the sides of the hill in reinforced concrete and creating the staircase of 318 steps which takes visitors to the top of the Golden Mountain.
