About Surat Thani

Surat Thani is a major transport hub connecting the islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan with other destinations in Southern and Central Thailand, particularly Bangkok. Surat Thani has an airport used by budget airlines, a railway station on the Bangkok to Malaysia line, and three bus stations. Except for those travellers arrive or departing by Bangkok Airways (which flies to a private airport in Koh Samui), nearly everyone else visiting or returning from Koh Samui or Koh Phangan will at least pass through Surat Thani. Surat Thani itself has few tourists attractions but it does have plenty of hotels and places to eat.

There are two hotels in Surat Thani where we recommend that you stay at if you need to spend a night in Surat Thani:

  • Diamond Plaza: A large hotel at the edge of Surat Thani city centre not far from Surat Thani’s major shopping centre, CentralPlaza Surat Thani. The Diamond Plaza is the best hotel in Surat Thani, and in addition to large comfortable rooms the hotel has a really good restaurant specialising in Southern Thai cuisine, as well as some international dishes.
  • Thai Rungruang Hotel: Located right in the town centre near the two down town bus stations, the Thai Rungruang Hotel is one of the longest running hotels in Surat Thani. Previously the top hotel in Surat Thani, it has now re-branded itself a backpacker hotels with rooms from 320 THB a night. The central location is convenient as you are walking distance to the Tonpo Alley night market and the lively riverside area.
