Wat Rong Seur Ten in Chiang Rai
Wat Rong Seur Ten is Chiang Rai’s ‘Blue Temple’. Wat Rong Seur Ten is located 3.9 km by road to the north of Chiang Rai town centre on the other side of the Kok River in a village called Rong Seur Ten, which roughly translated means ‘House of the Dancing Tiger’. The curious name relates to a legend that tigers used to jump between small island in the Kok River near the village to get from one side to the other.

The Blue Temple is a new temple completed in 2016 on the site of an older dilapidated temple. As the name suggests, much of the temple is blue, with a striking white porcelain Buddha statue inside the ordination hall. The style of the temple is similar to the White Temple, located to the south of Chiang Rai, in its use of moulded plaster and creative art work. The Blue Temple has become a massively popular tourist attraction in just a few years and we recommend visiting early in the morning to avoid the tour groups. The temple opens early day at 06:00 until 20:00. It’s free to get in and there are no restrictions on visiting the different parts of the temple except the normal rule for temples in Thailand that visitors are not allowed to shorts, short skirts or vests.
