Pai is a small town with a population of around 3,000 located in a valley on the main road about halfway between Pai and Mae Hong Son. Despite its small size, Pai is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Northern Thailand. Pai has a very busy small town centre area focused on catering to tourists with a range of guesthouses, restaurants and bars all within walking distance of each other. Over the past ten years Pai has become very popular with Asian tourists because it featured in the Chinese film Lost in Thailand and the Thai film Pai in Love. Places appearing in those films, such as Coffee in Love, are major stops for tour groups from both China and Thailand although they hold limited appeal for anyone who hasn’t seen these films.
The most popular activity for visitors to Pai is to rent a scooter and travel around the mostly quiet roads around Pai visiting attractions such as Pai Canyon, Yun Lai Viewpoint, Santichong Chinese Village, the hot springs, Ta-Pai Bridge, and Chedi Phra That Mae Yen, which is a newly built Buddha statue which you reach by climbing up over 300 steps with great views over Pai from the top. You can easily see all the attractions near Pai in a single day.
