About George Town in Penang
George Town is the main town on Penang Island. The Old Town area of George Town has been awarded world heritage site status by UNESCO because of its history as an important port on the trading route through the straits separating the Malay Peninsula from Island of Sumatra.
People from many parts of the world came to settle in Penang during the 19th Century and the city has lots of old buildings constructed during that period and a rich culture which a mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and European influences. The food in Penang has a reputation for being some of the best in South East Asia and the influence of these different cultures is evident in the cuisine.

Most visitors to Penang Island choose to stay in the Old Town area of George Town around Chulia Street and Armenia Street. There are lots of hotels in these areas as well as lots of restaurants, cafes and bars. George Town is a cosmopolitan and liberal area quite different to some of the predominantly Muslim parts of Malaysia, such as Kelatin State, and alcohol is served and consumed freely in most parts of the town, although not everywhere.
From George Town it’s easy and cheap to explore the rest of the Island on the efficient public bus service which has routes to most other parts of Penang Island, which is large with a varied geography including beaches, hills, forests and lakes.
