Most foreign visitors to Mukdahan pass through in transit to Savannakhet. Many will choose to stay the night in Mukdahan to allow an early start either to hand in their visa application at the Thai consulate or to catch an onward bus from Savannahkhet. Bus services to Central Vietnam depart from Savannakhet Bus Station.

For those palnning to stay overnight, or perhaps a little longer, Mukdahan has a fairly good range of hotels and restaurants. The better, and more expensive, of which are clustered in the city centre along the banks of the Mekong River. Mukdahan is a city with a long history, however, most of the buildings are modern. The city also has lots of markets and shopping centres. Lots of the shoppers are people from Laos. In terms of tourist attractions the top three are:

  • Phu Pha Thoep National Park, notable for its strange rock formations and viewpoint,
  • Ho Kaeo Mukdahan, which is a observation tower and local hisotry museum combined into one,
  • Wat Phra Si Maha Pho, which is a 100 year old temple combining Thai, Laos and Vietnamese architectural features.
