About Travel to Ao Nang

Ao Nang is a small coastal town with around 15,000 permanent residents located 18 km by road to the south west of the provincial capital, Krabi Town, and 26 km from Krabi International Airport. Ao Nang is also a massively popular holiday destination, particularly for foreign visitors.

Accommodation in Ao Nang

Despite being relatively small, Ao Nang has around 200 guesthouses, hostels, hotels and resorts, along with hundreds of short term letting properties available for online booking. Because Ao Nang is a busy tourist destination the price of accommodation is generally higher than in Krabi Town, nonetheless, compared to islands such as Koh Phi Phi, Phuket, and Koh Samui, Ao Nang offers relatively good value for money.

The cheapest accommodation is Ao Nang is in shared dormitories at dedicated hostels, some of which charge as little as 200 THB a night. Hostels such as KOKO Party Hostel 18 – 40 and Slumber Party Krabi offer a fun experience for younger travellers with organised events in the evenings where lots of alcohol is consumed.

At the other end of the scale, Ao Nang’s top hotels, such as the Centara Ao Nang Beach Resort & Spa Krabi and Holiday Ao Nang Beach Resort, Krabi, offer more luxurious accommodation for around 6,000 THB a night, depending on the room type.

Food and Drink in Ao Nang

As with accommodation, Ao Nang offers a really good range of places to eat covering all types of cuisine and includes branded international restaurant chains, such as Burger King.

What Ao Nang has a lot of in particular is Indian food restaurants some of which, such as the Bombay Palace and Ali Baba Restaurant, are very good. Ao Nang also has a good range of upmarket Thai food restaurants such as The Hilltop and Ton Ma Yom Thai Food Restaurant. What Ao Nang has fewer of, unfortunately, is restaurants selling basic Thai dishes at local prices.

Beaches

Ao Nang has two beaches to choose from.

The busiest beach, Ao Nang Beach, is 1.4 km long and the road which runs alongside this beach is the busiest shopping, eating, and drinking area in the town. Ao Nang Beach is very pleasant with magnificent views of a sea cliff at the eastern end of the beach separating Ao Nang from Railay. Boat services to Railay depart from the eastern end of this beach which can create a lot of noise in high season.

Ao Nang’s second beach is Noppharat Thara Beach, which starts 400 metres from the western end of Ao Nang Beach. Noppharat Thara Beach is 1.5 km long and in places is much wider than Ao Nang Beach. Far fewer people go to Noppharat Thara Beach than they do to Ao Nang Beach, and the long promenade behind Noppharat Thara Beach is a popular place for locals to come for picnics under the large trees that line the promenade.

Excursions from Ao Nang

Ao Nang has lots of amenities, and two nice beaches, however, the town has little in the way of cultural or other visitor attractions. There are, however, lots of interesting places to visit nearby on day trips from Ao Nang. The 3 most popular day trip destinations from Ao Nang are:

  • Wat Tham Suea: Located 18 km by road to the north east of Ao Nang, Wat Tham Suea (Tiger Cave Temple) is one of the best known tourist attractions in mainland Krabi Province. This temple has two main attractions. One is its hilltop shrine with fantastic views across the province’s rugged landscape. The other major point of interest is the series of cave shrines also located within the grounds of the temple.
  • Krabi Town: Located 13 km by road to the north east of Ao Nang, Krabi Town is an interesting place which you can reach from Ao Nang for 50 THB per person by travelling in one of the white coloured shared taxis that cruise west to east along the Ao Nang Beach road. The most exciting places to visit in Krabi Town are its picturesque riverside area, and the town’s fantastic markets. Krabi Town has the largest fresh produce market in Southern Thailand, and several very popular evening markets including a food market located close to the river.
  • Railay: Railay is really easy to reach from Ao Nang. Wooden boat services to Railay depart from the eastern end of Ao Nang. The charge is 100 THB per person each way. You can also walk from Ao Nang to Railay via the ‘Monkey Trail’ which is a steep path through dense jungle that starts from near the eastern end of Ao Nang Beach. Railay has 4 beaches, 3 of which are easily accessible by walking. The main attraction in Railay is the dramatic scenery of steep sided sea cliffs and hills, which are popular with climbers.
