Wat Phra Thaen Si La At in Uttaradit
Wat Phra Thaen Si La At is the most visited attraction in Uttaradit. Wat Phra Thaen Si La At is located 7 km to the west of Uttaradit Railway Station on the site of a settlement which pre-dates Uttaradit itself. The reason the temple is well known, and indeed has been visited by several of the Kings of Thailand, is the large stone block kept inside the main shrine hall at the temple. According to local legend the Lord Buddha visited Thailand and spent time giving sermons at a town which used to exist near to Wat Phra Thaen Si La At. Local belief is that the Lord Buddha sat on this stone block.
Wat Phra Thaen Si La At was constructed at some point during the era of the Sukhothai Kingdom (1238 to 1438). The original temple burnt down in 1908 and the only thing which survived the fire was the stone block. The new temple which stands today was constructed on orders from King Rama V. The inside of the hall where the stone block is kept is ornately decorated with some very old Buddha statues and lots of wall murals. Every year at the start of February there is a large festival at Wat Phra Thaen Si La At and at this time the temple receives large numbers of visitors.
