About Khao Sok National Park
Khao Sok National Park in Southern Thailand covers 793 square kilometres. 165 square kilometres of the park is taken up by Cheow Lan Lake and the rest is a pristine rain forest, believed to date back more than 150 million years making it one of the oldest forests in the world. Cheow Lan Lake, by way of contrast, is man made and dates back to 1980 when the area was flooded by the Ratchaprapha Dam. Khao Sok National Park is home a wide variety of plants, trees and animals. The most famous inhabitants of the park are the rafflesia, the world’s largest flower with its distinctive smell of rotting flesh, and the park’s tigers and leopards.

There are two ways to enter Khao Sok National Park. The minivan service from Chumphon takes passengers to the Western entrance to the park near the park’s headquarters building. This is the best place to go in order to go trekking in the national park. The other way to enter the park is to take a boat from a pier near to the Ratchaprapha Dam onto Cheow Lan Lake. You cannot easily reach the lake from the Western entrance so if you are planning to stay in one of the bungalow resorts on the lake you need to go to the pier. There are local taxi services which run between the Western entrance to the park and the pier on Cheow Lan Lake.
