About Travel to Ranong
Ranong is one of the lesser visited coastal areas of Thailand. Part of the reason few people visit is because of Ranong’s remote location close to Myanmar, separated from the east coast by hilly terrain, and disconnected from Thailand’s railway network. Flights between Ranong and Bangkok are also relatively expensive compared to travel to Krabi to Phuket.
About Ranong Town
Ranong town centre has around 25,000 permanent residents. The town centre itself is pleasant and has some interesting historical sites to visit such as the Rattana Rangsarn Palace and 100 Years Thein Suek House, as well as a lively night market, and a small number of restaurants and bars.
Visitors who stay overnight in Ranong Town generally do so in transit. The hotels in the town centre are less pleasant than the coastal resorts outside Ranong Town, such as The Blue Sky Resort Ranong, where visitors tend to stay for longer periods to enjoy the great coastal views.
Visitor Attractions in Ranong
Mainland Ranong is a place of considerable natural beauty. Large sections of the coastline are designated as national park land protecting, to varying degrees of success, the many mangrove forests. There are also some very scenic beaches, such as in Koh Kam and Bang Ben Beach, which is located within the Laem Son National Park. To visit these areas travellers need either to hire a private car or go on an organised tour.
Other attractions in Ranong Province include its waterfalls and natural hot springs. The most famous waterfall is the 20 metre high Punyaban Waterfall located 19 km to the north of Ranong Town. The most popular, and also very cheap, hot springs are Ponrang Hot Springs, located 10 km by road to the south of Ranong Town.
