About Travel to Koh Tao
There are two different routes which joint bus and ferry services take from Koh Lanta to Koh Tao. The first and best route is to take a ferry service from Koh Lanta to Krabi. These ferry services depart from Saladan Pier in Koh Lanta and arrive in Krabi at Klong Jilard Pier, which is 4 km from Krabi Town and 8 km from Krabi Bus Station.
From the Klong Jilard Pier passengers transfer from the ferry to either Krabi Town or Krabi Bus Station to join a large bus or a minivan for the journey to Surat Thani. Some of the transport operators take passengers from Krabi into Surat Thani City to change bus again or transfer into a minivan for a further 90 minute journey to one of the ferry ports in the Donsak district of Surat Thani Province to board a ferry to Koh Tao. Seatran and Songerm companies both use ferry terminals in Donsak. The Lomprayah High Speed Ferry Company, however, has a pier very close to Surat Thani city centre saving its lucky passengers the additional travel time from Surat Thani city to Donsak.
The other route you can take from Koh Lanta to Koh Tao is similar, but instead of taking a ferry direct from Koh Lanta to Krabi, you instead take a minivan to Koh Lanta Noi island to board a car ferry to the mainland. The car ferry departs from Khlong Mak Pier in Koh Lanta Noi and takes only 10 to 15 minutes to reach Hua Hin Pier on the mainland.
