Cabbages and Condoms in Bangkok

Located on Sukhumvit Soi 12 in Bangkok, Cabbages and Condoms is a popular Thai restaurant with a garden dining area as well as seating inside. The unusual name relates to the charity which operates the restaurant, the Population and Community Development Association (PDA).

The PDA is famous in Thailand for undertaking pioneering work in the 1970s promoting the use of condoms at a time when the subject of contraception was rarely discussed by the morally conservative Thai people. The restaurant has statues covered with condoms and gives out free condoms at the end of your meal. The restaurant is not popularising or promoting sex, but carrying on the work of the PDA in making the issue of contraception less of a social taboo.

Cabbages and Condoms in Bangkok

Cabbages and Condoms is a moderately expensive restaurant by Bangkok standards. The food is a modern take on traditional Thai dishes. The main selling point of the restaurant, however, is the beautiful garden dining area which has lots of plants, lights hanging down and ponds with koi carp. At the side of the garden dining area is a raised platform where musicians sit playing music on traditional Thai instruments. All in all it’s a great dining experience and somewhere visitors to the city should try to visit at least once.
