About Travel to Singapore
Singapore is the smallest, by land size, of the 11 countries normally defined as being part of South East Asia. Singapore’s population of around 6 million, however, means it’s also the most crowded country in South East Asia. In addition to this, to add further uniqueness to this island state, its people are by far the richest in South East Asia. In 2024, the per capita income for people in Thailand was estimated to be the equivalent of $7,557 USD. In Singapore it’s the equivalent of $91,272 USD per person.
Geography of Singapore
Singapore consists of 63 islands, and covers a land area of 735.2 square kilometre. The country as a whole is approximately 58 km long and 27 km at its widest point. This island state is typically described as having two parts: the Central Business District in the south, and the other parts of the island described simply as Outer Singapore.

Singapore Central Business District
Singapore’s central business district is split into 6 distinct areas, which are the most visited parts of the country:
- Little India: Located in the north east corner of the central business district, this part of the city has lots of residents with Indian heritage and lots of shops selling foods and other products from India.
- Chinatown: Located in the south west corner of the city, this part of Singapore was established as a ‘Chinese’ area when the city was established by British colonialists.
- Bugis and Kampong Glam: This is the traditionally Malay part of the central district, located immediately to the south of Little India.
- Riverside (Civic District): In the centre of the central business district, the Riverside area is where most of the museums and other important civic buildings are located. It’s also the part of the city with the busiest nightlife, particularly Clarke Quay.
- Marina Bay: Marina Bay is in the south east corner of the city, and it’s dominated by two large ‘integrated resorts’. Ai ‘integrated resort’ is the term used for a cluster of hotels, casinos and conferencing facilities.
- Orchard Road: Orchard Road is in the north west corner of the city, and it’s the place with the highest concentration of retail outlets, largely within shopping centres.
Outer Singapore
The parts of Singapore outside the central business district are far larger, and less densely populated. There are 4 areas to outer Singapore:
- Balestier, Newton, Novena and Toa Payoh: This is the area immediately to the north of Singapore Central Business District. Within easy commuting distance of the city centre, this part of Singapore has lots of new town developments and cheaper accommodation for visitors.
- Sentosa and Harbourfront: To the south of the city, this area has beaches and a large theme park.
- East Coast: The east coast of Singapore is largely residential and encompasses the island’s airport and long stretches of beach.
- North and West: Another residential and industrial area. The main points of interest for visitors to the North and West region of Singapore are the four large zoos located there.
