Khum Chao Luang in Phrae
The Khum Chao Luang in Phrae is the former home of the last ancestral ruler of Phrae. This grand home is now a museum which is free to visit and open every day from 08:30 to 17:00.
The Khum Chao Luang in Phrae was built in 1892 and is made almost entirely from teak. At that point in time Phrae was one of the main centres of the international teak trade and it inhabitants, particularly its royal family, became wealthy from the trade. The design of the house is an interesting mix of European and Asian architecture and is furnished in a similar way to the colonial houses of 19th Century French Indochina. Many of the rooms in the house have been preserved the way they would have looked back in the time when the house was in use. There are also lots of photographs of the last ruler of Phrae and his family, as well as museum style displays which have been added to the house which relate to the both the old royal family and the teak industry in Phrae.
