Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park

Cheow Lan Lake is a 185 square kilometre lake located within Khao Sok National Park. The lake is man made for the generation of hydro-electric power and was flooded in 1987. At the time the creation of the lake was controversial because people living in the valley which was flooded had to relocate and large numbers of trees, plants and wildlife died as a consequence of the project. However, over the years since the creation of Cheow Lan Lake it has become an integral and defining part of Khao Sok National Park as a major tourist attraction in its own right, a source of income for local people, and a new rich environment for wildlife. The lake is believed to be home to over 300 different species of fish, which in turn are source of food for other birds, reptiles and mammals living around the lake. The lake is also an important water source and in drier months many species come to the lake to drink, including the park’s elusive wild tigers.

Cheow Lan Lake is accessible from a tourist boat pier near Ratchaprapha Dam. Boat trips can either be booked through travel agents in packages including transport to the boat pier and back to wherever you are staying. Booked directly at the pier, a boat which can take up to 10 people costs from 1,500 to 4,500 THB for a day trip depending upon how far you decide to travel on the lake, which is more than 30 km long. Adventurous travellers can arrange to be dropped off at one of the several floating raft lodges on the lake to stay overnight, allowing time to swim and kayak on the lake independently.
