About Mae Sot
Mae Sot is a remote border town the around around which is home to hundreds of thousands of refugees who have fled from persecution in Myanmar. Mae Sot is multicultural town as a consequence, including a large presence of foreign aid workers assisting organisations providing help to the refugees. For those not involved in assisting refugees their principle reason for coming to Mae Sot is to cross the border into Myanmar and therefore travel from the border town of Mywaddy in Myanmar onto Yangon and thereafter to popular destinations such as Bagan and Mandalay. The border is 3.6 km from the main station in Mae Sot.

Mae Sot is also starting point for travel to Umphang for trekking and white water rafting. Umphang (186 km south of Mae Sot) is an even more remote town than Mae Sot and it takes around 4 hours in a shared taxi to travel there.
