Attractions in Phuket Town

There’s no beach in, or near to, Phuket Town and for that reason not so many visitors to the island choose to base themselves in its main town. Phuket Town is, however, very much the cultural centre of Phuket and a significant contrast to the island’s beach resort towns which contain very few cultural attractions.

Towards the end of the 19th Century and the beginning of the 20th Century, Phuket had a thriving tin mining industry and Phuket Town was the economic hub of that industry. A sizeable wave of immigrants came from China to Phuket during that period of prosperity and a large Thai-Chinese community was established in Phuket Town in the area around the Thalang Road. This part of  Phuket Town, now often referred to as the ‘Old Quarter’, is still home to a large Thai-Chinese community and contains many well preserved buildings constructed during the tin mining era.

Chinese immigrants to Phuket brought with them their own religious, cultural and architecture traditions. These traditions have influenced Phuket Town in ways which are still evident today. The town has many Chinese style temples, including the Jui Tui Shrine, and many residential buildings featuring a distinctive ‘Sino-Portuguese’ architectural style blending Asian design ideas with European architecture. The most famous examples of this building style are the grand mansion houses, such as the Chinpracha House, constructed by wealthy Chinese immigrants at the start of the 20th Century. More low key examples of Sino-Portuguese architecture come in the form of shop houses and hotels on the Thalang Road.

Travel from Phuket Town

Phuket Town is a hub for transport across Phuket Island. Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, about 50 km long by 20 km at its widest point. Private taxi services in Phuket are also among the most expensive in Thailand, generally exceeding even the relatively high prices charged by private taxis in Koh Samui. However, the network of low cost minivan services, shared taxis and fixed route local bus services is well developed in Phuket offering cheaper ways to get around the island for those willing to give the local transport system a go.

There are two main places in Phuket Town where you can board inexpensive minivan services or shared taxis to popular destinations in Phuket, such as Patong: Phuket Bus Terminal 1 and near Phuket Town Central Market on the Ranong Road.

Long distance bus services depart from Phuket Bus Terminal 2, which is located 5 km to the north of Phuket Town. The cheapest way to reach Phuket Bus Terminal 2 from Phuket Town is to take the ‘pink’ shared taxi service which departs from Phuket Bus Terminal 1.

You can also reach Phuket International Airport very cheaply from Phuket Town by taking the airport bus from Phuket Bus Terminal 1. The journey from Phuket Town to Phuket International Airport on the airport bus is scheduled to take 85 minutes.
