Koh Samui has an airport, a bus station and 5 ferry ports. You can travel direct from Koh Samui to wide range of destinations across Thailand using a combination of ferry and bus or minivan, or airplane and bus. For travel from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan, which is the neighbouring island and famous for its monthly Full Moon Party, there are 19 ferry services a day from January through to October. The fastest ferries from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan are operated by the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry Company whose fast catamaran ferries complete the journey in 20 minutes.

For inexpensive travel from Koh Samui to mainland destinations the best option is to take one of the two car ferry services. By car ferry it takes 90 minutes to travel from Koh Samui to the mainland. The point of arrival for both car ferry services is Donsak, which is 66 km from Surat Thani city centre. There is no bus station or other public transport services in Donsak so most travellers choose to book a bus transfer from the ferry port in Donsak onward to Surat Thani city with the ferry company which takes them to the mainland. Once in Surat Thani there are several private and public bus stations, a train station which is located 16 km to the west of the city centre, and an airport with inexpensive flights to Bangkok, as well as direct flights to Chiang Mai.
