About Lampang

Lampang is medium sized town in the Northern Region of Thailand just over 100 kilometres south of the regional capital Chiang Mai. Lampang gets a lot less visitors than Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai or Pai, which are the most popular destinations in the North of Thailand. Lampang, and the surrounding area, has a few interesting places to visit and its worth spending a day there to visit the major sites. Lampang also has a pleasant atmosphere, a range of places to stay and some good restaurants which make it a comfortable place to stay overnight.

The city centre has a few temples and other places to visit all within walking distance of each other, although a popular alternative to walking is to take a tour in horse carriage which is a form of transport for which Lampang is famous for. The best temples to visit in the town centre are Wat Chiang Rai, Wat Pratu Pong and Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao. Baan Sao Nok, which is a 100 year old teak house, is near this cluster of temples and an interesting place to visit. To the south of the river there is also a good night time weekend market called the Kad Kong Ta Street Market. The major attraction in Lampang, Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, is located 16 km to the south west of the city centre. Wat Phra That Lampang Luang is fortified temple founded in the 13th Century. Wat Phra That Lampang Luang features some fine examples of the distinctive Lanna style of architecture, many constructed entirely out of wood.
