About Travel to Koh Yao Noi

Koh Yao Noi is the smaller of two inhabited islands in Phang Nga Bay, on the west coast of Thailand. Koh Yao Noi is located roughly halfway between Phuket and Krabi, to the north of Koh Phi Phi. Despite being very easily accessible, a 30 minute speedboat journey from either Phuket and Krabi, Koh Yao Yai remains relatively under developed and offers visitors a different experience to staying in better know destinations such as Koh Samui.

Geography and People of Koh Yao Noi

Koh Yao Noi is best described as being one of Thailand’s medium sized islands. Measuring 11 km long by 7 km at its widest point it’s larger than Koh Phi Phi Don but smaller than Koh Phangan. The island has roughly 30 km of coastline featuring lots of white sand beaches separated by steep limestone headlands. Koh Yao Noi has three main beaches (Thao Khao, Klong Jark and Pasai beaches) and plenty of smaller secluded beaches you can reach by driving down small side roads off the island’s main concrete ring road.

The central and particularly northern parts of the island are hilly and densely forested, with a road cutting through the centre of this remote part of the island but virtually no buildings. Koh Yao Yai also doesn’t have a settlement that you could describe as being the ‘main town’. Instead, there are 13 small villages on the island mostly inhabited by formerly nomadic seafaring people who settled in permanent villages. About 90% of the island’s inhabitants are Muslim.

Hotels on Koh Yao Noi

Koh Yao Noi has recently become much better known as a tourist destination because of two very luxurious resorts that have been built in the south east of the island: Six Senses Khao Noi and Cape Kudu Hotel. The Six Senses Khao Noi is one of the more expensive beachfront hotels in Thailand with rooms costing around 60,000 THB per night in high season. Cape Kudu Hotel is less expensive with room rates of around 12,000 THB a night also in high season.

There are cheaper places to stay in Koh Yao Noi, Accommodation for under 1.000 THB per night is available but only inland. If you want to stay close to a swimming beach then expect to pay at least 2,000 THB a night.

Activities on Koh Yao Noi

Koh Yao Noi is not an activity centre. There aren’t any leisure activities like go-karting centres, gun ranges, golf courses or cinemas on Koh Yao Noi. The island does though have a yoga centre and a Muay Thai gym.

Motorbike Tour

Exploring the island on a rented motorbike is something many visitors to Koh Yao Noi will do, and that’s relatively safe on the island’s quiet concrete roads.

Snorkelling and Diving

Swimming and snorkelling are popular, as is diving. The island has two scuba diving schools.

Kayaking

Kayaking is also popular. The small island of Koh Nok in the south east of the island is fairly easy to reach in good weather, and paddling around the coastline is also enjoyable even in small sections.
