About Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon
Shwedagon Pagoda is the most important religious site in Myanmar. The pagoda is 99 metres high and covered with a large amount of gold. The pagoda sits on a base which is 275 metres long on each side with a number of other temples and pagodas.
Gold and Precious Stones
On top the the pagoda is a hti (umbrella ornament) encrusted with thousands of diamonds and rubies. Estimates of the total value of the gold and precious stones at Shwedagon Pagoda range from $6 to $24 billion USD.
Opening Hours and Admission Fees
The temple is open to visitors from 06:00 to 20:00 every day and admission costs $5 USD for foreign visitors.
Shwedagon Pagoda in YangonHistory of the Pagoda
Local legend is that Shwedagon Pagoda dates back over 2,500 years to the lifetime of the Guatama Buddha. The Lord Buddha, according to the legend, gave two Burmese travellers eight of his hairs. The travellers brought the hairs back to the local King of the Yangon area who built the pagoda to house the sacred hairs.
Some historians and archaeologists, however, disagree with this claim regarding the date of construction, which they place in the 6th Century.
