About Sakon Nakhon
There are two major tourist attractions in Sakon Nakhon city. The first of these is Wat Phra That Choeng Chum which is a 17th Century Buddhist temple built on the site of a 10th Century Khmer temple. The temple’s main feature is its 24 metre high chedi topped by a gold umbrella ornament. The chedi is, according to local legend, built on ground where four incarnations of the Lord Buddha left the imprint of their foot. The temple also has a Buddha statue which is believed to have been cast in 1257.
Wat Phra That Choeng Chum becomes very busy at the end of Buddhist lent (usually in October) when a parade of wax models of temples and other buildings goes through the city and ends in the temple grounds. This event attracts a lot of tourists and booking hotels and travel in advance is advisable during this period.

The other major attraction in Sakon Nakhon is Nong Han lake which becomes covered in pink flowers during certain times of the year. the lake cover 32 square kilometres and is located at the edge of the city centre. A popular activity for visitors to the city is hire a boat to go around the lake.
