About Nan

Nan province, on the border with Laos, is one of the least visited parts of the Northern Region of Thailand. Nan town is the only major settlement in the province with large parts of this remote up designated as National Park land. The two major National Parks in the province are Doi Phu Kha National Park (1,704 km²) and Khun Nan National Park (248.60 km²). These two fantastic and wild areas contain high mountains, waterfalls, rare plants and wildlife including wild boars and black bears.

Nan town itself has a long history and some interesting temples, city walls and archaeological sites. The town also has a good provincial museum (the Nan National Museum) with displays relating the history of the province. Nan is a laid back place with a small number of foreign visitors that reamins great value for money. The food is interesting and cheap and the town has a range of accommodation priced to satisfy the demands of cost conscious Thai travellers who make up the majority of the clientele at the town’s hotels.

The big annual event in Nan is its long boat race on the Nan river. The long boat race is a tradition going back over 600 years and participants dress in traditional costumes with up to 60 oarsman per boat. The long boat race happens around the end of September/start of October each year and tends to draw large crowds so book your travel and hotels in advance if you plan to visit at this time.
