Phuket is the largest of Thailand’s islands, some 48 km long and 21 km wide at the widest point. Phuket is the most popular tourist destination in Thailand after Bangkok and its generally more expensive in Phuket than anywhere else in Thailand. The cheapest, and possibly most interesting, place to stay in Phuket is Phuket Town which is the main town on the island. The China Town part of Phuket Town features lots of old buildings relating back to the 19th Century when the area became prosperous on the back of the tin mining industry.
The most popular part of Phuket is Patong, which is a beach resort on the West Coast of Phuket Island. Patong is best known for its infamous nightlife centred around the Bangla Road. The Bangla Road is a 340 metre stretch of road with bars and nightclubs for the entire length of the road. Bangla Road is not a particularly family friendly destination or one which female visitors are likely to appreciate. You can travel direct from Patong to Phuket Town by cheap local shared taxis and minivans, and from there you can travel onward to Phuket Bus Terminal 2 which is the island’s main long distance bus terminal. For travel from Patong to Phuket International Airport we recommend that you also travel to Phuket Town and then take the inexpensive Airport Bus which goes from Phuket Town to the airport frequently throughout the day.
