About Langkawi

Langkawi is a cluster of 99 islands located 30 km off the coast of the Malay Peninsula. The largest island is Pulau Langkawi which has a permanent population of around 100,000 people. Langkawi started booming as tourist destination from 1987 when it was granted duty free status meaning that products like alcoholic drinks, which are heavily taxed in mainland Malaysia, are a lot cheaper and more freely available than elsewhere in the country.

In addition to 8 major beaches the main attractions in Lagkawi include its cable car and ‘Sky Bridge’ which are both located in a mountainous part of the island, the Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls, the viewpoint on Gunung Raya mountain, Crocodile Adventureland, Legend Garden and Underwater World. Langkawi is very much a family oriented destination with tourist attractions appealing to wide audience. The island also has some great shopping opportunities which make it popular with Asian tourists such as Eagle Square and Oriental Village. Diving, sailing, trekking, go-karting, yoga and bird watching are all activities offered on the island. Once you have stayed long enough of Langkawi you can then easily travel onto other popular destinations in Malaysia by ferry to Penang or by plane from Langkawi International Airport, from where you can fly direct to Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Melaka, Chengdu and Kumming. The cheapest way to travel back to Thailand is to take the public ferry back to Satun, which takes 1 hour 30 minutes and costs 35 MYR adult fare and 28 MYR child fare.
