Khao San Road in Bangkok

Although only just over 400 metres long, the Khao San Road is the most famous and busy part of Bangkok for foreign visitors. It’s famous because this where is backpackers first started staying in Bangkok when Thailand became a popular destination for holiday makers in the early 1980s.

What attracted the first backpackers to Thailand to the Khao San Road were the cheap prices of accommodation in the area and the accessibility of the bars and restaurants which offered the type of things backpackers wanted and importantly where people could speak some English. The businesses on the Khao San Road have maintained this winning formula up to the current day and the popularity of the area has extended to other types of tourists on shorter visits.

The other big selling point of staying on the Khao San is that it is near the riverside where many of the main tourist attractions are located such as Wat Pho, Wat Arun and the Grand Palace. The Khao San Road is not, however, any where near Bangkok’s overground or underground networks so it is slower and more expensive to get to other parts of Bangkok than it is from areas that are connected to the city’s rapid transport networks.

The other downside of staying on or near the Khao San is that this part of Bangkok is very tourist oriented. You spend your time with other tourists not the local people, accept of course the ones serving you in shops and restaurants. For some this makes for a more pleasant holiday, others will prefer to stay somewhere else a bit less touristy.
