About Udon Thani

Udon Thani is one of the four major cities in the North Eastern region of Thailand, although it is not in itself a major tourist centre with the majority of the people flying to Udon Thani either to travel onward to Nong Khai and into Laos, or to visit friends and family in the area. Udon Thani is a regional transport hub with a train station and bus station as well as a provincial airport.

The major tourist attraction in the area is Ban Chiang which is a UNESCO listed archaeological site. The site at Ban Chiang contains a large number of Bronze Age artefacts, the most famous of which is the large collection of pottery. Also notable is Phu Phrabat National Park which contains some ancient cave paintings and weird looking sandstone rocks shaped by centuries of exposure to the elements. Within the city itself the major point of interest is Nong Prajak Park which features a large lake with a large yellow plastic duck floating in it. This park is a popular area for local people to play sport and eat picnics.
