Langkawi is the largest of a group of 99 islands off the West Coast of Malaysia near to the border with Thailand. Following major investment from the second half of he 1980s onward, along with granting of duty free status to the island, Langkawi has become one of West Malaysia’s top four destinations along with Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Melaka. Langkawi is different to the large tourist islands in Thailand such as Phuket and Koh Samui and it tends to attract a different type of visitor. Langkawi receives a lot of tourists from Malaysia and other Asian countries, but fewer from Europe in comparison to the Thai islands.
Langkawi’s most popular beach resort destination is Pantai Cenang which has a 2 km long white sand beach which is good for swimming. Pantai Cenang also has lots of hotels, restaurants and bars making it the liveliest place in Langkawi in the evening. Alcoholic drinks are very cheap in Langkawi because of its duty free status. The island’s top tourist attraction is the Sky Bridge and the cable ride you need to take to access it. The Sky Bridge is located near the top of Machinchang hill in the north west of the island, 18 km by road up the coast from Pantai Cenang. The Sky Bridge is a curved 125 metre long observation platform suspended about 100 metres off the ground. The 4,400 metre long cable ride to reach the Sky Bridge is exciting and well worth taking in its own right.
