About Travel from Chiang Mai


The Northern Railway Line currently goes no further North than Chiang Mai and there are no other railway line travelling east or west from Chiang Mai. For travel from Chiang Mai northwards to Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle you need to switch to travelling by bus, there are frequent departures from Chaing Mai’s main bus terminal which on the other side of the Ping River from Chiang Mai’s Old Town. There are also minivan services from the same bus station to Pai and Mae Hong Son.

For travel westward and into Laos you have three two options. 1. You can take a direct bus from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang in the north of Laos. 2. You can fly to Udon Thani from Chiang Mai and then take a train or bus to the border crossing in Nong Khai. 3. You can take a bus direct from Chiang Mai to Nong Khai and then take a taxi or tuk tuk to the border crossing at the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge and then a taxi or minivan to the Laos capital Vientiane.
