About Khao Lak
Khao Lak is less developed than the better known beach resorts in Phuket and Krabi Province, partly because at the moment there is no nearby provincial airport making it easy to get there. Phuket Airports and Krabi Airports around 2 hours away by bus if you can find a bus), and 3 hours from Surat Thani Airport. It takes some time to get to Khao Lak and means that less people come here. Because Khao Lak is not close to any large towns or cities it is also more expensive than some of the other more popular beach resorts in Thailand.
The reason why some visitors make the journey to Khao Lak, and pay higher prices to stay there, is the 20 km of white sand beaches and laid atmosphere. Khao Lak does not have the same type of night life as you find in some parts of Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui. Its a more family friendly destination and it is popular with older visitors to Thailand.

As well as the great beaches in Khao Lak, there are also some great opportunities for day trips. The most popular day trip from Khao Lak is tour of the Similan Islands. There are 9 islands within this National Park, 2 of which have beaches where the public are allowed to visit. The main attraction is the snorkelling and diving which some dedicated divers and snorkelling spending several days living on a boat visiting the various different diving sites which are considered by many to be the best dive sites in Thailand. Other worthwhile day trips include a visit to Phuket, Phang Nga bay and the nearby Lamru Khao Lak National Park.
