About Udon Thani


Udon Thani is a large and lively city in the North East Region of Thailand. The night life in Udon Thani, and where most foreign visitors stay, is the centred around the area between CentralPlaza and Udon Thani Railway Station. Udon Thani Night Market, which is adjacent to the railway station, is the focal point of the city in the evening time. The Night Market is somewhere people go not only to shop but also to eat and drink. Inexpensive food stalls and food court operate all week round and at the weekend bands play at Night Market and people go their to drink. The foreign oriented bars and restaurants are clustered around the Samphan Thamit Alley and the Prajak Sillaapkom Road which runs from the railway station east through Udon Thani city.

The major tourist attraction in the area is the National Museum of Ban Chiang, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The remnants of an old civilian were discovered in the area in the 1960s and the museum displays what was found which is largely pottery, iron and bronze artefacts up to 5,000 years old. You can reach National Museum of Ban Chiang by taking a bus from Udon Thani Bus Terminal 1 towards Sakon Nakhon and alighting at Nong Mek. Near to the traffic lights by Nong Mek village tuk-tuks wait to take visitors the 7 km to the museum. To get back to Udon Thani simply do the same journey in reverse. There is a bus stop for services to Udon Thani on the main road near Nong Mek village with frequent bus services back to Udon Thani Bus Terminal 1.
