Lots of people say that local bus services in Bangkok are too unpleasant to use. We disagree. For short journeys in Bangkok the cheap local bus services are well worth using, easier to figure out that you may imagine, and a lot better than trying to walk in the heat of a normal day in Bangkok.

We recommend that you alight from the bus at the bus stop opposite Supachalasai Stadium on the Rama 1 Road which is before the traffic lights at probably the busiest intersection in Thailand. From there it is short walk to the MBK Shopping Centre, or the National Stadium BTS station, via the elevated walkway over the road. See below for a map.

The journey time on the bus from near the Khao San Road is 30 to 45 minutes either way, depending upon the traffic. The bus themselves move fast enough, what slows the journey down is the congestion at the traffic lights on route. Any vehicle travelling on the same route is going to go at the same speed as a local bus and what makes travelling by taxi or tuk-tuk quicker is that they will take indirect routes designed to avoid the traffic jams as far as is possible. If you have the time then you can save up to 284 THB on a return journey from the Khao San Road area to Siam Square by taking a bus instead of hiring a taxi or tuk-tuk.
