About Surat Thani
Surat Thani is the provincial capital of Surat Thani Province with a city centre population of over 100,000 permanent residents. Surat Thani city is not a popular tourist destination in its own right, however, it is the connection point between long distance bus and train services and shuttle services to ferry ports for services to the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Surat Thani, however, is not without a certain rustic and authentic charm which not many tourists take the time to appreciate. Southern Thailand’s longest and cleanest river, the Tapee River, flows through the centre of the town and the riverside area hosts several well attended night markets each week. Surat Thani also has some good quality hotels and restaurants if you know where to look, such as the Diamond Plaza Hotel.
For travel onward from Surat Thani to Koh Phangan, Koh Samui and Koh Tao you have several options:
- Night Boat Pier: Departing from the town centre you can travel from Surat Thani to all three islands overnight on large converted wooden fishing boats with beds. Its a slow, cheap and generally uncomfortable experience.
- Tapee River Lomprayah Pier: Only 7 km from Surat Thani city centre is a pier used exclusively by the Lomprayah High Speed Ferries Company which offers fast transfers to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.
- Donsak: About 90 minutes away from Surat Thani city centre by bus, there are three different ferry services to the islands which depart from piers in Donsak District. The cheap car ferries to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan depart from Donsak.
