About Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang is the former capital city of Laos, and it used to be a difficult place to reach before they built an airport and a sealed road. This improvement in transport links has propelled Luang Prabang from a back water in terms of tourism – few people used to go because it took a long time to travel there by boat – to one of the top destinations in South East Asian for tourists after more than a beach and a market selling fake designer products. Luang Prabang is a place with a lot of history and an unique atmosphere. Moreover, from Luang Prabang there are plenty of opportunities for adventure travel as Luang Prabang sits on the edge of some remote and difficult to reach areas accessible only by walking there.

Luang Prabang now has a wide range of comfortable hotels and restaurants. Luang Prabang is a lot more expensive than the rest of Laos, however, this needs to be put into perspective as Laos is a very cheap country and what is expensive for Laos is cheap for everywhere else. We recommend a minimum of 2 days to enjoy Luang Prabang. Luang Prabang has lots of things to do and places to visit both in the city and the nearby countryside. You can visit the most popular attractions in the city in a day if you start early in the morning and finish at sunset on Phou Si Hill. The next day you can travel out of Luang Prabang on a day trip by boat or car and see waterfalls, caves and take a boat ride on the river.
